Northeast Master Plan Community Meeting

  • Memorial Hall 600 North 7th Street Trafficway Kansas City, KS, 66101 United States (map)

From the Unified Government:

At this open house, we will unveil a draft of the Northeast Area Master Plan and ask for your feedback. What works in the plan, what needs to be worked on, and what are we missing? You will also receive an update on the three Early Action Projects underway and learn how to get involved.  Meeting One will be on July 17 from 12:00 - 1:30 PM and Meeting Two will be on July 17 from 6:00 - 7:30 PM.  Both meetings will take place at Memorial Hall (600 North 7th Street, KCK).

Previous Update on this project:

On the short-term side, the plan includes funding for early action projects. These projects are intended to be tangible improvements to the neighborhood that can be accomplished in the near term and generate momentum for larger and more long-term improvements. Historic Northeast Midtown Neighborhood Association (HNMA) and Turtle Hill Community Association have recently received additional funding through successful grant requests.

HNMA was awarded a Neighborhood Rising Fund grant for $3,000 to rehabilitate a building in the northeast and host a popup grocery store event. HNMA has applied for an additional $10,000 grant from enterprise communities that, along with the $5,000 set aside from the Master Plan Budget, would bring the total project budget up to $18,000. The goal of the project is to rehabilitate a building in the Northeast for a future community grocery store and host a popup grocery event to showcase the possibilities and demonstrate the need and support in the community. YouthBuild KCK has also been involved in this project.

Turtle Hill Community Association also received a Neighborhood Rising Fund Grant in the amount of $3,000 for The Kids Art in Douglass Park at the orchard at 5th & Washington Blvd. This project is a subset of Turtle Hill’s Summer Youth Art Camp.

Under long-term opportunities, HNMA recently applied for a funding opportunity called Groundwork USA. Groundwork USA is a partnership between the National Park Service (NPS) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to support local organizations that are doing work around environmental remediation, community development, and youth engagement. This funding opportunity would include $200,000 to grow the capacity of HNMA to implement the Groundwork mission and Northeast Master Plan goals.

Finally, the Unified Government is preparing to submit an application for the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Choice Neighborhoods program. If selected, this would award $1.3 million toward implementing the Northeast Master Plan.
