Blocktoberfest Showcases Safer Street Design in Downtown KCK
From UG Planning & Land Use:
The Unified Government in partnership with the Strawberry Hill Neighborhood Association, Central Avenue Betterment Association, BetterDotte, and local businesses hosted a demonstration project for safer street design in Downtown KCK. During the event, 6th Street was transformed between Ann Avenue and Tauromee Avenue into a complete street with landscaping, room for bicycles and pedestrians, and expanded public spaces. The purpose of the event was to demonstrate how narrower lanes improve traffic safety by encouraging slower speeds and providing dedicated space for pedestrians and bicycles. Other features included enhanced crosswalks, benches and trash cans at bus stops, a pop-up market, beer garden, and mobile library. This improved street design is intended to enhance quality of life for residents and create a vibrant street that supports local businesses. The Unified Government is moving forward exploring ways to make these types of improvements permanent. Other partners included BikewalkKC, Better Block KC, YouthbuildKCK, Kansas City Public Libraries, Epic Arts, CHWC, KU School of Architecture and Design, the Grasspad, and LandscapeForms.
