Safe Routes to Schools Update

From the Unified Government:

Kansas City, Kansas is investing in the safety of our neighborhoods and building sidewalks around schools with the Safe Routes to School program. The following is an update on the Safe Routes to school infrastructure projects phase E-G.

Phase E includes sidewalks along Noble Prentis and T.A. Edison schools. The proposed sidewalks are on 44th Street and Gibbs Road near Noble Prentis and 10th Street and Sun Tree by T.A. Edison. Construction is scheduled to being in April.

Phase F is currently under design and will involve adding sidewalks on Welborn Lane near William Allen White Elementary School and West Middle School and on Orville Avenue near Francis Willard Elementary School.

Phase G was recently awarded funding by MARC during their October meeting. This will provide new sidewalks between Northwest Middle School and Bertram Caruthers Elementary School. Design and construction will take place between the years 2021-2022.

In addition to infrastructure, the Safe Routes to School project includes a “Walking School Bus” program and safety education in schools. The “Walking School Bus” involves students and adults walking together on popular routes. Fourteen schools are actively participating in the Walking school Bus program on a daily or weekly basis.
