KCKPD Emphasizes Bike Patrols

From the  Unified Government:

The Kansas City Kansas Police Department is placing an emphasis on bike patrols for each patrol station. Beginning now until the weather changes, each patrol station will be required to perform 1-2 bike patrol details per week.

The Community Policing Officers go through extensive bike training before they can ride a bike. This will allow officers to take police actions while on bike patrol. KCK Police Chief Terry Zeigler says this is a great tool to enhance community engagement with residents and increase the visibility of officers in the neighborhoods.

“Officers on bikes are more accessible to the public so this will hopefully set up situations throughout the community for some good positive citizen interactions, says Chief Zeigler. “Kids can really relate to bicycles this time of year, which may prompt them to approach an officer and have a conversation where they otherwise might not want to.”

Our Community Policing Officers go thru extensive bike training before they can ride a bike and we want them to keep their skills sharp. They are able to take police actions while on bike patrol & are a great tool to use in policing our neighborhoods.
