I-70 & I-635 Interchange Dual Bridge Repair Project

Below you will find the updated lane and ramp closure dates and times for the I-70 & I-635 Interchange Dual Bridge Repair Project. Due to rain this past weekend and the forecasted rain for tonight, the originally planned closures shown in the news release below were rescheduled as follows.

WEEKDAY OVERNIGHT LANE CLOSURES: Westbound I-70 over the Quarry Road Bridge will be reduced to ONE OPEN LANE for traffic control work beginning at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 11 and reopening at 5 a.m. on Thursday, May 12. Project work is scheduled to be completed on Thursday, May 12. (REV. 5-9-16)

LONG-TERM LANE & RAMP CLOSURES: A dual bridge repair project will begin on I-70 and I-635 with the following closures taking place beginning at 11 p.m. on Tuesday, May 10 through the project duration. Project work is scheduled to be completed in early September 2016. (REV. 5-9-16)

    • Westbound I-70 over the Quarry Road bridge will be reduced to two open lanes, 24/7 round the clock.
    • Southbound I-635 to westbound I-70 ramp CLOSED. Marked detour will be provided via K-32/Kansas Avenue west to Turner Diagonal. An optional detour will be State Avenue west to Turner Diagonal.
    • Northbound I-635 to westbound I-70 ramp CLOSED. Marked detour will be provided via K-32/Kansas Avenue west to Turner Diagonal. An optional detour will be State Avenue west to Turner Diagonal.

I10 and I635 Dual Bridge Repair

On Monday, May 9, weather permitting, a dual bridge repair project will begin on I-70 and I-635 in Kansas City, Kan. (Wyandotte County). Project work on the westbound I-70 bridge over Quarry Road includes bridge deck patching, polymer overlay and replacement of the approach pavement on both ends of the bridge. Project work on the northbound I-635 to westbound I-70 ramp includes replacement of the expansion joints on both ends of the bridge. Work will take place during daylight hours, Monday through Friday, with some Saturday work.

Beginning at 7 p.m. on Monday, May 9, westbound I-70 over the Quarry Road Bridge will be reduced to two open lanes and the southbound I-635 to westbound I-70 ramp will be closed, 24/7 round the clock, throughout the project duration. A marked detour will be provided via K-32/Kansas Avenue west to Turner Diagonal. An optional detour will be State Avenue west to Turner Diagonal. There will be a 55 mph posted speed limit on I-70 through the work zone throughout the project duration.

At the same time on Monday, May 9, the northbound I-635 to westbound I-70 ramp will be closed, 24/7 round the clock, throughout the project duration. A marked detour will be provided via K-32/Kansas Avenue west to Turner Diagonal. An optional detour will be State Avenue west to Turner Diagonal.

Advance message boards will alert drivers to the ramp closures. Drivers should expect delays, allow extra time during their daily commutes and must use alternate routes during the ramp closures.  Updated daily traffic information for this project and for the entire Kansas City Metro Area can be viewed at: www.ksdot.org/kcmetro/laneclose.asp

The Kansas Department of Transportation urges all motorists to be alert, obey the warning signs, and “Give ‘Em a Brake!” when approaching and driving through the project work zone.

Comanche Construction Co. (Olathe, KS) is the primary contractor on the I-70 and I-635 bridge repair projects with a total contract cost of $681,400 and $35,400, respectively. Project work is scheduled to be completed in early September 2016, weather permitting.
