BPU Wraps Up Refrigerator Replacement Rebate Program
Enrollment Deadline of April 30, 2016 for Customer EligibilityLaunched in October 2015, the Kansas City Board of Public Utility’s (BPU) Refrigerator Replacement Rebate Program is intended to encourage utility customers to replace older, less efficient units with an Energy Star qualified appliance. To date, the program has enjoyed broad community support and significantly exceeded projected participation levels.
As noted when the program was initially created, this was only a temporary incentive intended to reduce overall energy usage through updating one of homeowners and businesses most consumptive energy sources. Promoted as a limited, short-term incentive program, BPU announced recently that this program will cease April 30, 2016.
As such, anyone interested in utilizing this rebate program must act quickly. The amount of rebate provided to residential customers who utilize this program may be up to $1,000.00, and commercial customers may receive up to $3,500.00 (up to 70% of the purchase price of a new refrigerator).
Refrigerators operate 24 hours a day, using more electricity annually than any other appliance in the home. If made before 2001, investing in a newer model can save energy immediately and cut customer’s utility costs significantly over time. BPU’s rebate program is intended to reduce energy consumption and further protect the environment.
To receive a BPU Refrigerator Replacement Rebate, customers should do the following:
- Remove and replace older refrigerators with a new Energy-Star® or compatible qualified refrigerator from a retailer. Make sure the appliance has the Energy-Star® label or yellow Energy Guide label when making the purchase.
- Request and submit the BPU Rebate Application immediately by calling 913-573-9997. Include a copy of dated sales receipt /invoice showing manufacturer, model number, and purchase price of the new appliance – with a purchase date of no later than April 30, 2016.
- Include copy of the affidavit of disposal of previously-owned refrigerator.
- Once completed, customers will receive a mailed check from BPU within six to eight weeks.
