Mayor Holland Launches Listening Tour

mayor mark holland kckThroughout the rest of the year, Mayor/CEO of the Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kan., Mark Holland, will host monthly events as part of a listening tour that's designed to share information on city initiatives and the current state of UG affairs. More importantly, however, the listening tour will offer residents of each KCK district to share their feedback on new revenue spending.

"The Unified Government will soon have access to a new source of revenue, so at the Listening Tour we will break into small groups and ask for your feedback on how to spend it," Mayor Holland says. "In 2017, the STAR bonds used to finance the Village West area will pay off and the city will receive a windfall of sales tax revenue totaling around $12 million. How would you invest this money in our community? Should we use it all to lower our property taxes? Should we take a portion of the money and put it toward street repair, new sidewalks or demolition? These additional funds provide us an opportunity that doesn't come around often, and we need to work collaboratively to make sure we put these resources to use thoughtfully and efficiently."

The series kicks off in district 1 with UG Commissioner Gayle Townsend and At-Large Commissioner Melissa Bynum from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 26, at Northwest Middle School, 2400 N. 18th St., Kansas City, Kan. Here's a list of upcoming tour stops, each of which will include commissioners from the corresponding districts:
